I remember when I was a kid, my mother would say, "Eat fish, it's good for your brain." Well, I understand why she said that, and why people believe that, because fish are high in omega 3 fatty acids. However, fish can also have a lot of mercury in their fat. For example, swordfish, ahi tuna, big, fat fish. The fatter or bigger the fish, the more likely they are to have mercury in their fat. So if you're taking fish oils that have not been purified of the mercury, you're getting mercury in your system and in your brain. The mercury is terrible for your brain and far outweighs any benefit you might get from the fish. So if you're going to take omega 3 fatty acid, which you absolutely should, you would be much better off taking algae oil. Algae oil is the purest form of Omega 3 Fatty acids, and will give your brain the nutrients it needs, without the harmful mercury. I think we'd all agree that the brain is a very important part of our body. Taking care of your brain is super important, and you might be surprised at some of the foods that you love that actually are not healthy for your brain. For example, MEAT. Meats are high in saturated fat. When saturated fat gets into your body, it actually clumps your red blood cells together and prevents them from properly carrying oxygen through the body. So, if the red blood cells are clumped together, they can't carry the oxygen and then release the oxygen like they are supposed to. There's actually something called "The Mind Diet". It is a research-based eating program that is aimed at keeping your mind sharp and your memory working best. They say, too, that you want to stay away from the red meat. Now, don't worry about protein. I get asked all the time, regarding a plant-based diet, as to where to get your protein. The body only needs about 8 - 10% of it's total caloric intake as protein. If you're eating a good plant-based diet of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, you're probably getting 3, 4, 5, even 6 times as much protein as you need. Eating a lot of meats gives you way more protein than you need, and too much protein can be bad for your liver and for your kidneys. So I recommend staying away from the meat if you can. You certainly want to take care of your brain, and I want to help you. Something that you want to avoid is Artificial Sweeteners. As if regular sodas weren't bad enough for you, I assure you that choosing a diet soda or drink with artificial sweetener is an even worse choice. Research shows that people who sip even one diet soda per day, are nearly 3 times more likely to have a stroke or develop dementia. Let that sink in.... 3 times more likely. Scientists believe it is the artificial sweetener that is causing this. One of the things that can happen if you're using an artificial sweetener, say, like aspartame, is this: Aspartame breaks down into 3 components: aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methyl esters. High levels of aspartic acid in a concentrated form, actually cause the brain to fire faster than it's supposed to. So, too much artificial sweetener can be harmful for the brain. Now, a single glass of wine or beer probably isn't going to mess up your brain, BUT, it does affect the communication in your brain. And over time, this becomes cumulative. So the more you drink, the more difficult it is for your brain to process new information and to remember things. Alcohol can make you feel confused and fuzzy.... but alcohol can also lower your testosterone levels. It's ironic that sometimes you may think that you're going to have a drink and you'll be all charming and sexy. But the reality is that, even though you may feel playful and fun, you actually won't function better, because of the drop in testosterone levels in your body. So, alcohol is bad for your brain function short term as well as long term, and it also affects your hormone levels. Fried foods. I know you don't want to hear this, because everybody loves fried foods. But the reality is that people who eat a lot of fried foods, especially fried processed foods, fare worse on tests that measure their brain skills. This doesn't mean you're not smart or intelligent. It just means that your brain may be experiencing a deficiency of oxygen because of inflammation in the blood vessels........ because of the fried foods. Inflammation in the blood vessels can interfere with the blood supply to the brain. Your brain needs a lot energy, a lot of good blood, and it needs a lot of oxygen. So try to stay away from a lot of fried foods for your brain health, but also for other areas of your health. Fried foods have a lot of toxic chemicals in them, such as acrylamide. Acrylamide is a known carcinogen, and can even increase your risk of dementia short term and long term. I hope you'll stay away from fried foods for good! It is loaded with Omega 6 fatty acids, which cause a lot inflammation in the body. Also, most peanut butter has a mycotoxin. Mycotoxins can also cause allergic reactions. So, instead of that, I would use Almond Butter, or Cashew Butter. Those are much better. Fruit Juice. Did you know that 1 glass of fruit juice can have up to 6 grams of sugar in it... that's the equivalent of about 3 glazed donuts. You should only have about 40 grams of sugar per day. So, I'm not a fan of fruit juice. Whole fruit is ok, but not fruit juice. Instead of fruit juice, try this; slice up some oranges, limes, and lemons, put them in a pitcher of water and let them sit for a few minutes and drink that. Artificial sweeteners. A lot of people still think that artificial sweeteners are good for you, but they definitely are not. In fact, studies have shown that the more artificial sweetener you use, the more it can adversely affect your brain, and it can also cause you to gain weight. Why would you want to do that, you may ask.... well, because most of us use one side of our body more than the other throughout the day.... we type, we talk on the phone, we do chores, drive a car, and so on. Now, the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, and the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body. We need to integrate those two parts of the brain. Brain health is super important. When you balance and integrate the brain, you'll have more energy, you'll think clearer, you'll sleep better, you'll work better, you'll just feel better! Everything changes when you integrate the brain and use both sides of the brain. This simple health hack is easy and is fun to do with your kids, too. The exercise I want to show you is called the cross crawl. It's simple. You bring your right elbow to your left knee, and then your left elbow to your right knee. Repeat that 30 times.... it takes about 30 seconds! You can do this standing or sitting. It's great if you will do this easy exercise for your brain once an hour, or at least 4 times per day. Set your clock to remind you. It's that important! You'll be amazed at how much more energy you have and how much clearer you think. I hope this helps you live better and healthier.
