Macular Degeneration : What I Did To Beat It

February 8, 2019

About 8 years ago, I went to my eye doctor and he did a standard eye exam. Shortly after we looked at the pictures and specifically the back of my eye. At this point, the Doctor regretfully informed me that I had a condition called Macular Degeneration. My immediate response was “what should I do…

Is surgery necessary for clogged arteries?

September 14, 2023

Stress and damage to the artery walls allows inflammation to occur, and that leads to plaque buildup in the arteries, because that helps make the artery wall stronger, by laying plaque down.... and that helps deal with the stress and damage. This is why plaque is usually seen in arteries, where there is a lot more pressure. Since veins don't have a lot of pressure... the kind that arteries do...the plaque is often not seen there. So surgery oftentimes is absolutely necessary to save a patient's life. But we also need to get to the cause of the plaque, not just treat the symptoms. A more plant focused diet is going to be the key to help reducing the plaque. Try including avocados, apples, and other high fiber foods, as well as eating a good mix of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Cholesterol Oxidation: What You Need to Know

August 29, 2023

Oxidized Cholesterol... you've probably never heard of it. Let me give you this important information. Why is oxidized cholesterol so much worse than raw cholesterol? A significant body of evidence indicates that oxidized cholesterol, which produces something called oxysterols, is one of the main triggers of Alzheimer's disease. But that's not all. Cholesterol Oxidation Products (COPS) are associated with the initiation and progression of a number of major chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and kidney failure. Once again, we'll put this in the "Dr. Joe Was Right" column. I gave this advice 40 years ago... give up animal products. Studies come out every day, showing that I was right about that. These Cholesterol Oxidation Products are produced when animal products are heated. When you heat something, you destroy enzymes, and enzymes are necessary for every function in your body. All forms of cooking can produce this since you're getting maximum cholesterol oxidation at only 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Are some types of cooking worse than others? Yes. Microwaving chicken or beef appears to produce twice as much cholesterol oxidation as frying. If you look at bacon, raw bacon doesn't have doesn't have any oxidized cholesterol. DO NOT EAT RAW BACON. Like all animal products, bacon has cholesterol, but it's not oxidized until it is cooked. According to these studies, grilling seems to be the safest way to cook animal products with regard to oxidized cholesterol, but grilling has other harmful effects. Also note: If you put leftovers in the refrigerator, then reheat them, the oxidized cholesterol skyrockets. My general advice is to avoid eating animal products. A plant based diet is healthy, nutritious, and eliminates the harmful effects of eating animal products. Benefits of Turmeric, Part 2

August 19, 2023

Can Turmeric really help with diabetes? The answer looks like... Yes! Now, this is really exciting because so many people have diabetes. When patients come into my office, the number 1 medication they are on is for blood pressure. The number 2 is kind of tied between diabetes and cholesterol. So, if there is something else we can do to help with diabetes, I want to know about it. There is a study of 240 adults, and they found that taking curcumin, which is the active ingredient in Turmeric, over nine months, lowered the odds of developing diabetes in pre-diabetic subjects. If you have family risk, if your family has a history of diabetes, if you don't have a good diet, you want to do everything you can to reduce the odds or your getting diabetes. So you may want to add Turmeric to your diet. There are not any down sides to taking Turmeric, and there are many benefits. Just to be clear it won't happen overnight. This study took nine months, but the results were really positive. That's great news for everyone! Benefits of Turmeric, Part 1

August 18, 2023

Can Turmeric really help with depression? Surprisingly, there is research out now that shows the compounds in Turmeric that actually has shown to help people with depression. One of those compounds is curcumin. Now, some of the studies have been a little mixed, but the cool part of this, is that Turmeric is pretty benign.... so if you take it, there really isn't a down side to taking it. I has a lot of health benefits. But this study that I found regarding Turmeric and depression got me really excited. So many people suffer from depression and don't know what to do about it. Turmeric can be part of an overall protocol. I wouldn't recommend using Turmeric as your only treatment, but when it comes to depression, you want to get your nervous system and your digestive system working. A fully functioning digestive system is probably the main thing that is missing, when it comes to depression. I've seen this countless times in my practice. Your body has to be able to break down your food, to absorb the nutrients, to fuel the neurotransmitters in your brain, so your brain is healthy and functions well. If your digestive system isn't working as it should, it can lead to things like depression. Benefits of Glutathione #healthtips #nutritioncoach #glutathione #liverhealth

August 16, 2023

Glutathione.... what the heck is that? Glutathione is an antioxidant, and it's composed of 3 amino acids: cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid. Glutathione is a component of the body that is really important for many things. One of the things it does is help the liver work more efficiently. It's one of the most powerful antioxidants we have. What does an antioxidant do? So, there are things called free radicals. Free radicals attack your body and eat away at your cells. Antioxidants reduce the damage that the free radicals do.... many times antioxidants can even shut down the free radicals completely. If you can boost your glutathione levels, you improve your oxidative stress and improve your mitochondrial function, which produces energy in the body. Your body can make glutathione by eating things like cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts. But I take a glutathione supplement every day, too, because I want to make sure that my liver is as healthy as possible. Dr. Joe's Glutathione is available on my website, drjoe.com If this helps you, please follow me for more tips, subscribe to my channel, and please smash the "like" button. The Worst Foods For Your Brain, Part 5

August 11, 2023

The Worst Foods For Your Brain, Part 5 Hey folks, Dr. Joe here. I remember when I was a kid, my mother would say, "Eat fish, it's good for your brain." Well, I understand why she said that, and why people believe that, because fish are high in omega 3 fatty acids. However, fish can also have a lot of mercury in their fat. For example, swordfish, ahi tuna, big, fat fish. The fatter or bigger the fish, the more likely they are to have mercury in their fat. So if you're taking fish oils that have not been purified of the mercury, you're getting mercury in your system and in your brain. The mercury is terrible for your brain and far outweighs any benefit you might get from the fish. So if you're going to take omega 3 fatty acid, which you absolutely should, you would be much better off taking algae oil. Algae oil is the purest form of Omega 3 Fatty acids, and will give your brain the nutrients it needs, without the harmful mercury.
