CHLORELLA Chlorella, a green algae, has been used for hundreds of years in Far East countries as both a dietary supplement and alternative medicine. In a randomized controlled trial, the researchers found that subjects receiving standard therapy plus 1,800 mg a day of Chlorella, about three-quarters of a teaspoon, had significant improvements in physical and cognitive depression symptoms and anxiety, but we cannot discount the placebo effect. In a non-alcoholic fatty liver disease study, participants taking 1,200 mg a day of Chlorella (about a daily half-teaspoon) had significant drops in liver inflammation, possibly due to their significant weight loss, which would explain their significant improvements in fasting blood sugars. The researchers concluded the green algae has “significant weight-reducing effects” with “meaningful improvements” in liver function. A meta-analysis of 19 randomized controlled trials found that Chlorella dropped LDL cholesterol by eight points on average and dropped the participants’ blood pressure by a few points.
